NEWS from CRICKLEWOOD – July/August/September 2011

Welcome to ‘News from Cricklewood’ summer newsletter geared to keeping you in touch with what CIP and inviting your suggestions and support. We hope you have enjoyed the summer are fully prepared for the autumn/winter

Launch  CIP was officially launched to an audience of more than 100 people on 19th July 2011 in the Sala room of the Crown Hotel.  Our guest speaker was writer and broadcaster, Fergal Keane who spoke passionately about community and identity.

Phone boxes  BT is currently considering the data on criminal activities associated with these boxes which has been provided by our police colleagues and will then come back to us with their comments. CIP is keen that many of these boxes are removed to prevent further criminal activity and the health hazard which many of them present. We are yet to hear from Spectrum regarding their phone boxes.

Street cleaning  Following a successful bid by CIP for wardworking funding from Brent, a deep clean of the Broadway pavements including gutters was carried out by Brent together with Barnet and Camden over the past month albeit with varying results, nevertheless a much improved cleaner High Street.     At the same time, a co-ordinated clean and repainting of bus shelters on the Broadway was carried out by Clear Channel. These departments have suffered significant cuts so it is even more important that we all work together to find ways of ensuring a clean and healthy Broadway. The problems with litter, fly tipping and layers of filth on the footpaths and on street furniture persist. We are going to meet monthly to keep on top of this issue.
Policing:  on 19th September the police and SNT teams of the three wards met at the Crown to discuss  and map the Community Safety Plan 2011 - 2014.
On Monday 26th September 2011 members of CIP, members of  Mapesbury, Childs Hill and Fortune Green wards and members of Barnet, Brent and Camden Safer Neighbourhood teams met to map the Cricklewood Community Safety Plan 2011-2014. The meeting agreed that quality of life issues should central to our strategy. The agreed priorities are Street drinking, Drug use and Prostitution.  Danny Maher will liaise with Simon Causer on writing an operational plan to underpin the strategy with a focus on actions and targets that achieve our vision for a safer community in Cricklewood.

Town Centre Upgrade Programme We are working on preparing a bid for the Outer London fund Round 2. We are pleased that Barnet Council have agreed to be the accountable body for our bid. CIP will act as the delivery body. We also wish to thank Brent and Camden for supporting the bid. The deadline for the bid is 14 November 2011 and thanks goes to Osita Udendon of Udenson Caldbeck Associates for leading on the bid process, along of course with CIP members who are also contributing. We will include funding request to capacity build CIP so that we are in a stronger position to take forward our vision for Cricklewood.

Community Action Against Crime – Home Office Innovation Fund CIP members are currently completing a funding bid to the Home Office for resources to reduce crime in our area. We agreed to focus on one of its six criteria i.e. alcohol & drug related crime. This is a major issue in Cricklewood and if successful with this bid CIP will work with the police and other relevant public agencies to tackle this issue.

Schools Angela and Shirley are developing a strategy focusing on a partnership with local primary and secondary schools with a focus on encouraging/motivating the children to take a proactive part in the development of a safe, clean and proud Cricklewood. More on that story later..........

NEWS from CRICKLEWOOD (May 2011) Issue No. 1

Hello folks and welcome to the first ‘News from Cricklewood’ newsletter geared to keeping you in touch with what CIP is doing and planning to do as well as to provide impact reports.

Phone boxes We are talking with BT and Spectrum to remove most of the phone boxes on the roadway as they are a health and crime hazard. Many of them are in such a filthy state that local residents can not use them but more worryingly they are being used for advertising prostitution services and also are a magnet for drug dealing. Traders are reporting that they do not want these boxes in front of their premises.
Street cleaning:  We had an interesting meeting recently with reps from Barnet, Brent and Camden Street cleaning services. Obviously these departments have suffered significant cuts so it is even more important that we all work together to find ways of ensuring a clean and healthy Broadway. There are significant problems with litter, fly tipping and layers of filth on the footpaths and on street - furniture. We are going to meet monthly to keep on top of this issue
Clean up week: A big thanks in Inspector Simon Roberts (Partnership & Priority Intervention Team Barnet Borough) who coordinated the Clean up Week. The report will be on the  website http://www.cricklewoodcip.org/Cricklewood_CleanUp_Week.html shortly
Alcohol voluntary code: Brent and Barnet Licensing departments with the support of CIP have persuaded off-licences not to sell super strength alcohol i.e. lager above 5.5% voluntary code. This should have a significant impact on our aim to reduce street drinking in the area. CIP will check if the code is being adhered to and report on the difference it has on the street drinking culture in the Broadway
CDZ signs: It seems we have some signs although Barnet will put some on the B&Q side. The issue now is that these signs need to be visible and maintained in order that they have a positive impact on the area
Trader survey: As part of the Clean Up Week CIP members consulted with over 250 traders on the Broadway. Results will be on the website presently.  www.cricklewoodcip.org. The Top 4 areas of concern for traders were parking, anti social behavior, rubbish and crime.

Town Centre Upgrade Programme We are encouraging the three councils to consider jointly applying to the Mayor’s £50M Town Centre upgrade programme to improve our Broadway. A part of the application should include funding to resource a Town Centre Manager project, a much needed resource to help us at CIP to achieve our aims for the Broadway.
